Hoyo de Bartola
El Hoyo de Bartola is a neighborhood in the center of the city of Santiago. It has a lower elevation and the river of Gurabo runs through the center. This community is located next to the former airport of Santiago which is now a city park and police headquarters. The community was formally a garbage landfill, but now is used informally. This is a poor community with many risks. Being close to the river there is a constant threat of landslides and flooding. Each year many homes are destroyed by rising waters and collapsing hillsides. This is an area with a population that continuously experiences economic struggles. Therefore, the community experiences many of the issues that are connected with lower income urban settings. The church is located in the heart of this community and has approximately 40 members. The church has a nutrition program which provides meals 6 days a week as well as basic medical care. The church also provides clean water through a water purification system. The church has been active in this community since 2001.
